What is a "Build-up-edge"?

A built-up-edge is the accumulation of workpiece material on cutting edges due to smearing of material and its adherence to the edges under heat and pressure. The effect is somewhat similar to "chip welding" except metal is gradually pulled from work rather than chips adhering to the edges.
