What is "Relief" on a cutting tool?
Space provided behind the cutting edges to preclude contact with the work. Sometimes called "primary relief", with clearance then termed "secondary relief". Relief on end teeth is "axial relief" while relief on side teeth is "peripheral relief" or "side relief".
