Why use a "Diamond Disk" versus a "Roll" to dress a wheel?

The cost of diamond roll is high. For many one-off jobs, where a diamond roll dressed grinding wheel is desirable, the CNC control of the machine tool may be used to advantage. Machine tool builders offer a diamond roll disk dressing system which effectively dresses like a diamond roll but uses a very thin disk to profile the form onto the periphery of the grinding wheel. The radius on the periphery of the disk may be as small as 0.007'' (0.18mm) which in many cases competes with single point dressing. The CNC control provides for flexibility and easy profile programming. The diamond disk produces a consistant and controlled wheel periphery as well as faster dressing times and longer dresser life compared with single point diamonds.
