What is “Out-of-Round” grinding ?

The Studer/Schaudt product line offers various types of “out-of-round” grinding. They are:

1. Cam lobe grinding

2. Crank pin grinding

3. Polygon grinding

Out-of-round grinding could be described as CNC interpolation of the X Axis (grinding wheel) and the C Axis workpiece .

For cam lobe grinding, the cam lobe profile is entered into the control and the wheel base responds to the C Axis of the workpiece.

For crank shaft grinding, the crank shaft rotates concentrically about the center axis of the main bearing and the pin is ground using continuous path control through interpolation of the X and C Axis.

For cam shaft and crank shaft out-of-round grinding, CBN grinding wheels are used exclusively. This eliminates any grinding wheel wear and allows the profile to be generated more accurately.
