What is "Ringing" of a grinding wheel?
Only too often grinding wheels are abused, ill-treated or stored in poor conditions. It is therefore essential to ring a grinding wheel before mounting. Ringing means holding the grinding wheel delicately in the bore and using a wooden mallet to strike the wheel firmly, but gently, and listen for a clear ringing noise as if ringing a piece of porcelain china. A clear sound indicates that the wheel has no cracks. Ring around the wheel 4 times to be sure that the wheel is crack free.
