When do you "grind" versus "hard turn" a part?

"Hard Turning" versus "Grinding"...many factors enter into this decision. Start by asking what tolerances are needed. If the material is steel hardened above 40 Rc and the tolerances are within the tolerance envelope of the machining center or lathe then HARD TURN. If the tolerances are too severe for the machining center and or lathe then GRIND. With the need to maintain process control in today’s world you can reduce potential problems by keeping the job on one spindle. Some other considerations; stock to be removed, part geometry, depth of hardness, work speed, just to name a few.
