What are "Synthetic Cutting Fluids"?
Synthetic Cutting Fluids are also water-based. Unlike soluble oils, synthetic cutting fluids are true solutions, i.e.,they completely dissolve in water and have no tendency to separate. The synthetics, which are also called chemical cutting fluids, are usually clear or translucent. They are easily distinguished from soluble oils which tend to be milky in appearance.
Synthetic cutting fluids are used primarily as coolants. However, their lubricating properties can be enhanced with additives.
While emulsified oils have been the most common type of cutting fluid in end milling operations, synthetics have become increasingly popular and will probably become the dominant cutting fluid in the years ahead. To understand why, here are two of the main advantages: 1.Economical to use. While synthetic cutting fluids are initially more expensive than emulsified oils, they last three to four times longer, making them cheaper to use in the long run. Annual cutting fluid replacement costs are reduced. And since the synthetics are biodegradeable, problems and costs associated with disposal of spent cutting fluids are also reduced, and 2.Better work visibility. Since synthetic cutting fluids are clear, the operator has a better view of the work being machined.
