What is a "Wear Land" on a cutting tool?

Area just behind the cutting edge resulting from rubbing as the cutting edge wears away as an inevitable result of normal cutting action. The rubbing action gives the wear land a bright aspect, and this land can be used to judge the appropriate time to pull the tool for sharpening.
