What is "Plunge Type" cylindrical grinding?

Plunge grinding is a cylindrical grinding process where the grinding wheel plunges into the workpiece to form a profile on the workpiece periphery. Long and slender parts require special handling and fixturing as the normal forces exerted on the workpiece, during plunge form grinding, are high. It is necessary to use steadies to support the workpiece at a number of points along its length. The steadies provide support to the workpiece against the machining forces and minimize deflection.
