What is a “Re-entry Cam Lobe” ?

This is a concave cam profile in the flank of the cam lobe. In the past, most car engine valve mechanisms featured flat cup tappets, which do not require concave cam profiles. In today’s new engines, however, there is a distinct preference for roller lever systems and valve drive mechanisms. As a result, sliding contact is being replaced by roller contact, thus reducing the friction loss in the engine and consequently, fuel consumption. High engine performance and good emission features require high valve acceleration, however, for a roller lever system, high valve dynamics involves highly concave cam flanks. Schaudt has now succeeded in developing a grinding spindle suitable for practical applications which permits the use of CBN grinding wheels for only 50 mm diameter wheels.
