What is "Cold Shut"?

A discontinuity that appears on the surface of cast metal as a result of two streams of liquid meeting and failing to unite. A lap on the surface of a forging or billet that was closed without fusion during deformation. Freezing of the top surface of an ingot before the mold is full.
